Low FODMAP diets for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Many people report intrusive gut symptoms such as bloating, wind, pain with diarrhoea or constipation.
We have known people with fatigue and pain conditions, who also have IBS, where their main barrier to returning to work is not fatigue and pain but is in fact their gut symptoms.
It is always important that other reasons for these symptoms are ruled out by a doctor. However, if these symptoms persist after making healthy changes, a Low FODMAP diet may help.
FODMAP (Fermentable Oligo - Di Monosaccharides And Polyols) diets offer a promising new approach for people with IBS. This includes a period of restriction of FODMAPs followed by a period of re-introduction.
Regular balanced diets are high in FODMAP. Healthy individuals do not feel the effects, but people with IBS can suffer the effects due to gut hypersensitivity.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends these diets and advises that their implementation must be under the guidance of a specialist trained dietitian for clinical effectiveness.
